Russell W. Carlson, 70, passed away at The Villages Regional Hospital on Sunday, January 15, 2012. He was born in Chicago, IL and was a long time resident of Palos Hills, IL. He and Diane moved to Florida fifteen years ago finally settling in The Villages a year and a half ago. He was employed by the North Palos Fire Protection District for 37 years and retired with the rank of Captain. Russ dedicated his life to the NPFPD keeping the trucks and equipment in top running order as a mechanic while working his way up to the rank of captain. Other than Diane, Russ’ true love was Chevy automobiles, and he could fix any of them. Beyond tinkering in the garage, he enjoyed fishing, boating, and volunteering his time with various organizations. He is survived by his wife, Diane, The Villages, FL; son, Russell “Rocky” (Barbara) Carlson, Wilmington, IL; daughter, Vanessa (Michael) Parsons, Miami, FL ; sister, Judy (Mike) Southerland, Palos Hills, IL; grandsons, Brandon Carlson and Andrew Parsons; brothers-in-law, Richard (Susan) Slisz; Jerome (Patsy) Slisz; Vincent (Joy) Slisz; Joe Slisz; sisters-inlaw, Dorothy (Robert) Riesbeck; Cecelia (Robert) Pulver; nieces and nephews, Kris (Michele) Southerland; Mark Southerland; Mary (Corey) Chucka; Patricia Slisz; Jerry Slisz, Jr.; Kimmy Slisz; Joe Slisz; Dawn (Rich) Granata; Gina (Dave) Kiebles; Alex Slisz; Stephanie Slisz; Matthew Pulver; great great nieces and nephews, Nicole Southerland; Amanda Southerland; Skylar Slisz; Brogan Slisz; Richie Granata; Michael Granata; Jordan Kiebles, David Kiebles, Jacob Kiebles; Nicholas Kiebles. He is preceded in death by, brother- in- law, Dan Slisz and nephew, William Slisz. A visitation with a gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 1-5 p.m. at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services – The Villages.
